Most of the time button-mashing works perfectly well, with only an occasional pause for thought if a musket-wielder or grenade-thrower is nearby. The combat is even worse and although it seems to be attempting to copy the Batman: Arkham games, with a largely counter-based system, the swashbuckling feels imprecise and skill-less. We think it’s supposed to be an attempt at realism, but watching him make an exaggerated effort to climb up walls or jump across bridges kills the pacing and makes timing your moves unnecessarily vague. One of the primary appeals of the series in its first few years was the pakour skills of its protagonists, but Edward’s gymnastic skills seem decidedly slow and clunky compared to other franchises.
